Today we went on a little trip to Santafe de Antioquia. It was a 2 hour drive from our hotel in Medellin…through some absolutely amazing mountains, canyons and a 4.6 km long tunnel through one of the mountains. We drove on curvy-windy mountain roads up the mountain and down into the valley where Santafe lies. To get there we crossed a suspension bridge over the Cauca River…the largest river in Colombia.
Once in Santafe, we could not believe how hot it was in this valley. We walked around the centro, little marketplace and took lots of pics. The roads are cobblestone and very narrow only separated from the walls of the homes by a narrow sidewalk. The homes all have impressive and colorful doors and windows - all with bars in the Spanish tradition, many with balconies on the second floor with flowers. It is a place where many movies are filmed. We were able to see inside one of the homes. It was just a door in the street…but inside was a huge garden with rooms around the outside. Very beautiful! Another home, upon looking inside the door had a swimming pool. After about an hour and a half of walking Mike and I did not feel so good. The heat started kicking in and we both felt like we were going to throw up. We got back into the car to go across another Puente De Occidente~ bridge of the east.
Once across the bridge, we were able to get some ice cream and gatorade…much better. Even the ninos were heaving. We walked across the single lane, wooden, suspension bridge with the kids while Gloria drove the car…. this was the kids favorite part…crossing the bridge high above the river.
Diego did get sick on the trip. He would not take the motion sickness tablet before the trip. He had a popsicle on our stop and is fine when he is not in the car.
While driving we stopped the car several times to take pictures and video – breathtaking. Tristin commented “this is definitely where Juan Valdez is from – just like the TV commercials.”
Once home we rewarded the little bugs with a quick dip in the pool at sunset. After a home made meal (frozen ravioli – Ha!) Yerly hand washed every dish, utensil and glass! – think we found her first chore on the chore chart!!!
They were very well behaved today and bedtime was much more enjoyable today – even if it still took them over an hour to go to sleep!!! We talked about our favorite [parts of the day and then sang a twinkle-twinkle and itsy-bitsy and B-I-N-G-O replacing it with Y-E-R-L-Y and D-I-E-G-O was their name-o.
lol love the chore chart thing too funny!! :)
